DELEGATE PAUL KRIZEK AND SUPERVISOR RODNEY LUSK ANNOUNCE FUNDING FOR LEE DISTRICT WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT CENTER
Wednesday, February 23— Delegate Paul Krizek (D-Mount Vernon) and Supervisor Rodney Lusk (D-Lee District) announced today that the House Appropriations Committee has approved an amendment to the Budget Bill (HB 30) to support the purchasing of equipment and other infrastructure for the outfitting of the new Lee District Workforce Development Center in Fairfax County. HB 30 will be voted on in the House this Thursday ahead of a budget conference committee with the Virginia State Senate. The reconciled version will then head to Governor Youngkin.
“I must congratulate the vision of Supervisor Lusk in making this center a soon to be reality for our community. Working with his team, Melwood and Building Momentum will administer the workforce development program at the center. Incidentally, Building Momentum was just named the best veteran owned business in America by the US Chamber of Commerce. This important mission is the reason I worked so hard to get this amendment into the House budget, ” said Delegate Krizek.
“I am thankful for the hard work of Delegate Krizek and his staff. This Workforce Development center will be a vital part of our efforts to end generational poverty on Richmond Highway, and this additional funding helps make that vision a reality,” said Supervisor Lusk.
In accordance with the Fairfax County’s Economic Recovery Framework, Fairfax County is currently in the process of outfitting and opening a first of its kind in the region community and workforce development center in the heart of Hybla Valley. The center will serve the immediate community as well as residents up and down Richmond Highway.
In addition to recreation and childcare, the center will contain classroom and workshop space that will be utilized to upskill and train residents for employment in the trades and technology jobs of the future. Through partnerships with the building trades, and companies like Amazon and INOVA Hospital Systems, these trainings will be directly linked to employment opportunities that will be available in the area over the next two years and beyond.
To date, Fairfax County has invested approximately $4.2 million in this initial effort, with the center slated to open in early 2022. To learn more, please visit https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/neighborhood-community-services/lee-district-community-center.
